World Circular Economy Forum recognizes SundaHus as an inspiring example

World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) recognizes SundaHus as an inspiring example of a "Circular Economy Enabler". WCEF is an international event held once a year. Leading up to the annual conference, the main organizer Sitra decided to compile a global list of inspiring examples that contribute to a circular economy. This since “Organizations and companies need inspiration to participate in the circular transition”, according to Sitra. One of the 39 examples on their list is SundaHus Material Data, because the system lays the foundation for a circular construction industry or, as it says in the list “Building the foundation for the future of circular construction".

- We are very pleased that we have been noticed by a global player especially since we know that there were many good examples on Sitra's selection list, says Lisa Elfström, CEO of SundaHus. At the same time, we naturally want to continue moving forward with developing the company and our services to contribute to a more circular, non-toxic and long-term valuable built environment.

Due to their material intensity, buildings are increasingly seen as potential urban mines. However, reusing and refurbishing used construction materials is challenging and most materials end up downcycled or wasted altogether. One issue hindering the potential for recycling is a lack of information about the material stock and content in buildings, preventing circular end-of-life use of the materials. In order for the construction industry to reduce its resource consumption and become more circular, many different things are required, but it is very much about two main tracks: trying to reuse as much building material as possible here and now and laying the foundation for much easier reuse in the future. SundaHus helps actors in the construction sector choose materials without unwanted substances and ultimately re-use or recycle them.

- We are on the list because we "lay the foundation for a more circular construction industry". We do this primarily by collecting, structuring and archiving the information about what is in building products and buildings. Our system supports the selection of safe materials without unwanted substances in the design and construction phase, and information about the used materials is saved to a building-specific database, enabling automatic processing and decision-making. This makes it easier to manage and ultimately re-use or recycle the materials used in the building now and in the future, says Jan Boström, CTO at SundaHus.
